Monte Carlo evaluation of kerma in an HDR brachytherapy bunker

2004

In recent years, the use of high dose rate (HDR) after-loader machines has greatly increased due to the shift from traditional Cs-137/Ir-192 low dose rate (LDR) to HDR brachytherapy. The method used to calculate the required concrete and, where appropriate, lead shielding in the door is based on analytical methods provided by documents published by the ICRP, the IAEA and the NCRP. The purpose of this study is to perform a more realistic kerma evaluation at the entrance maze door of an HDR bunker using the Monte Carlo code GEANT4. The Monte Carlo results were validated experimentally. The spectrum at the maze entrance door, obtained with Monte Carlo, has an average energy of about 110 keV, m…

Modelling of Orientational Ordering in Lipid Monolayers

1993

Lipid monolayers at high densities are modelled as rigid rods grafted to an interface at the sites of a regular lattice. The transition between the state where the rods are uniformly tilted to a disordered state with no (average) tilt is studied by computer simulation methods. For the one-dimensional model, the molecular dynamics approach is found much less suitable to equilibrate the system rather than Monte Carlo methods. Both in d=2 discretized versions of Monte Carlo codes are much more efficient than continuum Monte Carlo methods, in spite of huge storage requirements. While in d=l the transition occurs at temperature T=0 via the spontaneous creation of solitons, at d=2 a finite temper…

Neutron yield from carbon, light- and heavy-water thick targets irradiated by 40MeV deuterons

2009

Abstract Angular and energy distributions of neutrons produced by the interaction of deuterons of 40 MeV in carbon, light- and heavy-water targets, in which they are stopped, have been measured by the activation method. A discrepancy with a time-of-flight measurement for d + C has been found. The results are compared with a Monte-Carlo calculation and are discussed in the frame of building a deuteron-to-neutron converter for the SPIRAL2 radioactive ion-beam facility.

Coupling MCNP-DSP and LAHET Monte Carlo Codes for Designing Subcriticality Monitors for Accelerator-Driven Systems

2001

The design of reactivity monitoring systems for accelerator-driven systems must be investigated to ensure that such systems remain subcritical during operation. The Monte Carlo codes LAHET and MCNP-DSP were combined together to facilitate the design of reactivity monitoring systems. The coupling of LAHET and MCNP-DSP provides a tool that can be used to simulate a variety of subcritical measurements such as the pulsed neutron, Rossi-α, or noise analysis measurements.

Optimization of krypton yields for rp-process studies at ISOLDE(CERN)

2004

The production of neutron-deficient krypton isotopes having astrophysical importance has been studied at the ISOLDE PBS facility at CERN. To investigate several effects on the yield a Monte Carlo code has been extensively applied.

Sensitivity and Efficiency of the INTEGRAL Imager

1995

A detailed simulation program of the INTEGRAL Imager has been written and implemented using the GEANT-3 Monte Carlo code. The expected detection efficiency and continuum sensitivity have been evaluated. The results obtained for the CsI configuration of the Imager are compared with those obtained with the new configuration which foresees a top plane made of CdTe solid state detector elements.

Design of a neutron converter for fission studies at the IGISOL facility

2012

The upgraded IGISOL facility with JYFLTRAP, at the accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla, has been supplied with a new cyclotron which will provide proton or deuteron beams of the order of 100 μA with up to 30 MeV energy. This makes it an ideal place for measurements of neutron-induced fission fragments from various actinides, in view of proposed future nuclear fuel cycles. In the present paper, some considerations for the design of a neutron converter, based on simulations with the Monte Carlo codes MCNPX and FLUKA, are described.

YaJEM — A MONTE CARLO CODE FOR IN-MEDIUM SHOWER EVOLUTION

2010

High transverse momentum (P_T) QCD scattering processes are regarded as a valuable tool to study the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions, as due to uncertainty arguments their cross section should be calculable independent of medium properties whereas the medium then modifies only the final state partons emerging from a hard vertex. With the heavy-ion physics program at the CERN LHC imminent, the attention of high P_T physics in heavy ion collisions is shifting from the observation of hard single hadrons to fully reconstructed jets. However, the presence of a background medium at low P_T complicates jet-finding as compared to p-p collisions. Monte-Carlo (MC) codes designed to simulate t…

Dosimetric feasibility study for an extracorporeal BNCT application on liver metastases at the TRIGA Mainz

2010

This study investigates the dosimetric feasibility of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) of explanted livers in the thermal column of the research reactor in Mainz. The Monte Carlo code MCNP5 is used to calculate the biologically weighted dose for different ratios of the (10)B-concentration in tumour to normal liver tissue. The simulation results show that dosimetric goals are only partially met. To guarantee effective BNCT treatment the organ has to be better shielded from all gamma radiation.

Monte Carlo dosimetric study of the BEBIG Co-60 HDR source

2005

Although not as widespread as Ir-192, Co-60 is also available on afterloading equipment devoted to high dose rate brachytherapy, mainly addressed to the treatment of gynaecological lesions. The purpose of this study is to obtain the dosimetric parameters of the Co-60 source used by the BEBIG MultiSource remote afterloader (BEBIG GmbH, Germany) for which there are no dosimetric data available in the literature. The Monte Carlo code GEANT4 has been used to obtain the TG43 parameters and the 2D dose rate table in Cartesian coordinates of the BEBIG Co-60 HDR source. The dose rate constant, radial dose function and anisotropy function have been calculated and are presented in a tabular form as w…
